Dr Janice Liao is a Senior Consultant in Hand and Reconstructive Microsurgery, with subspecialty expertise in hand and wrist conditions.
Born in Taiwan and raised in New Zealand, she completed her MBBS in Australia in 2009 before relocating to Singapore in 2012. She completed her specialist training in Hand Surgery in 2019 and was awarded the College of Surgeons Gold Medal in Hand Surgery as the top-performing candidate.
Her clinical expertise focuses on the management of acute hand and wrist injuries, including sports-related injuries, as well as compressive neuropathies such as carpal tunnel syndrome.
She also manages a wide range of degenerative and overuse conditions, including trigger finger, De Quervain’s tenosynovitis, ganglion cysts, and osteoarthritis.

Dr Liao believes in tailoring treatment to each patient to minimise pain and optimise function in daily activities, work, and hobbies.
Dr Liao is passionate about medical education and mentoring the next generation of surgeons.
She has served as Core Faculty of the NUHS Orthopaedic Surgery Residency Program and Director of the Microsurgical Training Laboratory at the National University Hospital, where she has helped train surgical specialists from Singapore and around the world.
Dr Liao has authored close to 20 peer-reviewed publications and has presented her work at regional and international scientific meetings. Her research contributions have been recognised with several awards from the Singapore Society for Hand Surgery.
Outside of work, Dr Liao is a mother of two and an avid sports enthusiast. As a mother, she understands firsthand the physical demands of caring for an infant, including the challenges of “mother’s wrist” (De Quervain’s tenosynovitis). This personal experience gives her additional insight into the impact that hand and wrist conditions can have on daily life.
Dr Liao has competed in badminton and table tennis tournaments and captained her university table tennis team to medal-winning performances at university championships. Her multicultural upbringing and diverse life experiences have shaped her holistic approach to healthcare, enabling her to connect with patients from all walks of life.
Dr Liao will start seeing patients at Island Orthopaedics from 17 August 2026.
